Media Coverage

The right to food is a global human right, so it is important that incidents of food insecurity, famine, and other evidence of failure to secure this right for all are known to the global public. It is also important to highlight the right to food mandate and increase the visibility of the Special Rapporteur’s work in fulfilling this mandate. As such, the Special Rapporteur offers the following examples of relevant media coverage.

Famine Watch

At the 8020th meeting of the Security Council, held on 9 August 2017,  the President of the Security Council expressed its grave concern about the unprecedented level of global humanitarian needs and the threat of famine presently facing more than 20 million people in Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and northeast Nigeria. The Security Council’s statement demonstrated a broader recognition that famine and the failure to guarantee the right to adequate food is a humanitarian crisis that requires swift attention and action by all relevant stakeholders.
